Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act 2010
The Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act 2010, came into effect on 1st January 2011. The Act establishes a civil partnership registration scheme for same-sex couples providing a range of rights, obligations and protections consequent on registration including maintenance obligations, protection of a shared home, pension and succession rights.
The Act has a number of implications for employers relating to taxation, pensions and equality in the workplace. A short note has been compiled which outlines the main implications for employers regarding civil partners and cohabitants.
