SFA training courses April 2016

Train to Gain is a suite of training programmes tailored to the needs of small business, offered by the Small Firms Association throughout 2016. The courses are short and a choice of dates and locations are available. The programmes are offered at special rates that make it realistic for small companies to participate.

In April 2016, we have two courses which may be of interest for you and others in your business: a two-day Foundations in Employment Law programme and a one-day Employment Law Update.

Foundations in Employment Law and HR Best Practice

This two day course is designed to equip owner/managers with the skills needed to handle HR issues and provide a sound understanding of employment law.

There are over forty pieces of employment legislation in Ireland designed to protect employees. Non-compliance with this legislation can result in large financial compensation claims awarded to employees by the Workplace Relations Commission or Labour Court. These awards can be anywhere from four weeks' to five years' pay.

Protect your business and manage your team to achieve the best results.

Course outline:

  • Contracts of employment - flexible, permanent, part time, fixed term and specific purpose contracts
  • Discipline & dismissal - effectively ending the employment relationship if a member of your team has a conduct, performance or absence issue
  • Equality legislation - understanding the protections that must be afforded to employees
  • Protective leave - maternity, paternity, parental, carers, adoptive and force majeure leave
  • Working time - hours of work, holidays, public holidays and rest breaks
  • Grievance handling - dealing with conflict and bullying/harassment issues

Attendees also leave with the SFA's compressive employment law guidelines.

Employment Law Update

2015 brought the most significant reform of employment law and the employment dispute resolution services in modern history, as well as many significant changes to employment law, which will affect all businesses. Furthermore, the current economic climate is compelling owner/managers to review their existing employment arrangements.

This course is designed for both HR professionals with a level of knowledge and operational mangers that mange teams day-to-day.

We all need to understand the best HR practices to use in managing our teams and the exposure we open our businesses to when we do not follow employment law changes.

Course outline:

  • The reform of the dispute resolution services
  • Contracts of employment
  • Employment equality legislation
  • Protective leave
  • Recent case law & new developments
  • The Organisation of Working Time Act

Attendees also leave with the SFA's compressive employment law guidelines.

Date:             21 April 2016 - one-day course
Venue:Ibec, 84-86 Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2
