Ibec launches new ‘Smarter World, Smarter Work’ campaign

This week, Ibec launched a major new campaign – Smarter World, Smarter Work – calling for a range of reforms so that Ireland can be better prepared for the oncoming changes to the labour market. As technological advancements progress further and further, new jobs will be created, but inevitably some jobs will be left behind. It is not realistic to hang on to these out-of-date jobs, but instead Ibec suggests a better focus on training and education that allows for flexibility in the workforce.


To achieve this goal, Ibec calls for four key actions: investment in skills and employability, flexibility at all life stages, a dynamic labour market, and smoother career transitions.

“Rapid digitalisation, changing lifestyles, and demographic shifts mean jobs and careers are being transformed. This brings great opportunities, but also risks. A new era of quality job creation and improved living standards is possible. But we need to embrace technological and workplace changes in business and right across society.”



  • Ireland’s lifelong learning rate is less than half the benchmark set by the EU and significantly below what is required by a knowledge-based economy.
  • Employers are generally satisfied with graduates’ range of skills, however less than 45% of employers are satisfied with graduates’ entrepreneurial and business acumen skills.
  • Over 75% of employers were confident of graduates having the academic knowledge, but less confident about graduates having the right attitude and aptitude towards work.
  • Estimates suggest that students currently in the education system will have held an average of 10-12 jobs by the time they reach the age of 38.
  • Over 60% of children today will work in jobs that currently do not exist.

Campaign asks:

  • Harness the collaborative approach of educators, employers and Government to develop employability skills that meet future workplace and society needs.
  • Give students, through their learning, the tools and language to communicate their value and experience in a business context.
  • Use the curriculum as a catalyst for innovation and a way of embedding employability skills into the teaching, learning and assessment of students.
  • Enable institutions to create and foster a culture of life-long learning through progressive education policy and strategic funding.
  • Champion the role of employers in supporting the development of relevant skills.
